LLM Advertising in 2026: ChatGPT, Google, Copilot and the Ad-Free Holdouts

LLM advertising is real but uneven. ChatGPT sells ads, Google and Microsoft serve them through existing campaigns, and Perplexity and Claude stay ad-free. Here's the honest map.

LLM advertising, buying placements inside AI assistants, went from theory to live channel in 2026, but not evenly. ChatGPT built a real ad platform. Google and Microsoft started serving ads inside their AI answers using the ad systems they already run. And two big names, Perplexity and Anthropic's Claude, deliberately stayed ad-free. If you've read that you can buy ads across every assistant, that's wrong. This landscape covers what's actually buyable, what runs through existing accounts, and what to ignore.

Last updated July 2026. Every platform below is moving quickly. Treat status and pricing as a snapshot we refresh over time, and be skeptical of any specific CPM quoted for AI ads, since most are estimates, not published rate cards.

Why LLM advertising is happening now

Two things converged. Assistants captured a huge share of research and buying questions, and their owners need to fund enormous compute bills. Ads are one obvious answer, and where they appear the format is consistent: a clearly labeled sponsored unit near a genuinely useful answer, never rewriting it. The pitch is that someone describing a real problem to an assistant is closer to a decision than someone typing two words into a search box. But not every company agrees ads are worth the trust cost, which is why the field has split in two.

The landscape at a glance

AI assistant advertising as of July 2026. This maps what is buyable and how, not a set of guaranteed rates. Confirm current terms with each platform before budgeting.

PlatformAd statusHow ads work
ChatGPT (OpenAI)Live in 7 marketsA dedicated ad platform at ads.openai.com. Sponsored link below the answer, bought CPM or CPC, no minimum spend.
Google AI Overviews / AI ModeLive (Overviews) and US testing (AI Mode)No separate platform. Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns become eligible; new Gemini-built formats in test.
Microsoft CopilotTesting since late 2025No separate platform. Ads are built from existing Microsoft Advertising assets (Performance Max, Product, Multimedia, Search).
PerplexityAd-free (dropped ads Feb 2026)No ads to buy. Visibility is organic only, earned through citations.
Claude (Anthropic)Ad-free by policyNo ads. Anthropic has publicly committed to keeping Claude ad-free.

ChatGPT: the only true AI ad platform today

ChatGPT is the flagship, and the only one of these where you buy ads through a dedicated self-serve platform. OpenAI began testing sponsored links in February 2026 and has expanded to seven markets with an Ads Manager at ads.openai.com and no minimum spend. It has the largest audience and the most developed tooling of the group. We break it down fully in our ChatGPT ads guide, and it's the platform our ChatGPT ads service is built around.

Google: ads inside AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's approach is different: there is no separate AI ad buy. Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns become eligible to show above, below, or within AI Overviews, matched by AI-powered targeting like broad match and AI Max rather than exact keywords. At Google Marketing Live in May 2026 it went further, testing Gemini-built formats in AI Mode, Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, that place clearly labeled Sponsored units inside AI answers alongside an independent AI explainer. For advertisers already in Google Ads, this arrives as an extension of what you run, not a platform to learn. Note that Gemini the standalone assistant is not the ad surface; Google Search's AI features are.

Microsoft Copilot: built on Microsoft Advertising

Microsoft has been testing in-conversation ads in Copilot since late 2025, and like Google it uses assets from existing campaigns rather than a new buying tool. Copilot draws on Performance Max, Product, Multimedia, and Search ads built from your existing creative, favoring strong visuals. There's no separate Copilot reporting yet, and its reach is smaller than ChatGPT's, but for advertisers already using Microsoft Advertising, extending into Copilot placements is a low-friction test rather than a new discipline.

Perplexity and Claude: the ad-free camp

This is where a lot of outdated advice goes wrong. Perplexity tested sponsored questions in 2024 and 2025, then abandoned advertising entirely in February 2026 to protect user trust. Anthropic has committed to keeping Claude ad-free and even ran Super Bowl spots taking aim at ChatGPT's ad model. You cannot buy placement on either. The only way onto them is to be cited organically, which we cover in our Perplexity ads guide. Ipsos found 63% of US adults trust AI answers less when they contain ads, and these two companies are betting their brand on that number.

What about Meta, xAI, and the rest?

Beyond these five, other players have signaled interest in advertising inside their AI products, but concrete, buyable formats aren't confirmed as of mid-2026, so we won't quote specifics you can't actually act on. The honest read is that the direction of travel points toward more ad-supported assistants over time, driven by the same compute economics, but the timing and the formats are still unsettled. Plan around what exists today, and watch the rest rather than budgeting for it.

The common thread: paid plus organic

One principle holds across the whole map. Ads buy you reach inside an answer today, but they don't make an assistant cite you organically, and on ad-free engines like Perplexity and Claude, citation is the only lever you have. That comes from generative engine optimization: the content, structure, and entity signals that make an LLM mention your brand in an unpaid answer. Paid gets you in now where it's sold; organic keeps you visible everywhere, including the engines that will never take your money.

Which platform should you start with?

For most brands the honest answer is ChatGPT, and not because it's fashionable. It's the only dedicated AI ad platform, it has the largest audience, the entry cost is low with no minimum spend, and its CPMs have been falling as inventory opens. Google and Microsoft placements are usually easiest to reach as extensions of the accounts you already run, so switch them on there rather than treating them as new platforms. Perplexity and Claude aren't paid options at all; win them with organic AI visibility.

How to approach LLM advertising

You don't need to be on every surface to take LLM advertising seriously. You need a plan that starts where the return is clearest and expands deliberately. A few principles keep that disciplined:

  • Start where your buyers already ask questions, not where the hype is loudest.
  • Test the biggest, cheapest dedicated opportunity first, which today is ChatGPT.
  • Turn on AI-answer eligibility inside your existing Google and Microsoft campaigns rather than building new ones.
  • Measure conversions in your own analytics, since cross-platform attribution is still immature.
  • Pair every paid buy with organic AI visibility so citations compound across every engine, paid or not.

Advertise across every assistant that sells ads

We run paid campaigns on the engines that sell them, chiefly ChatGPT plus Google and Microsoft AI surfaces, and pair them with organic AI visibility so you also show up in ad-free engines like Perplexity and Claude. See our AI advertising service for the cross-engine program, or our ChatGPT ads service if ChatGPT is where you want to start.
