Competitor analysis used to mean one thing: see who ranks above you in Google, and why. In 2026 it covers two surfaces. Your competitors show up in the ten blue links, and they also show up inside AI answers from Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. A tool that only covers the first is giving you half the picture.

This guide compares nine competitor analysis tools by what they show, what they cost and who they suit. Semrush is first because it shows competitor keywords, traffic, ads and AI share of voice together, which is the most complete single view on the list. Ahrefs is second for backlink depth. PromptRush is third for the AI-only share-of-voice layer. The others each win on one thing, and we point out what.

If you are buying for a large site, also see our enterprise SEO tools comparison. For the AI-only slice, the AI Overview tracking tools guide is the narrower shortlist.

Quick picks

  • Best overall: Semrush
  • Best for backlink research: Ahrefs
  • Best for AI share of voice: PromptRush
  • Best for total website traffic and audience data: Similarweb
  • Best for paid search history on a budget: SpyFu
  • Best for product and sales teams tracking rivals: Crayon

Prices are list prices at the time of writing and change often. Confirm them on each vendor's site before you buy.

What competitor tools should show in 2026

Before comparing products, decide what you need to see. A useful competitor tool covers six things. No tool is perfect at all six. The question is how many you need in one place and how much you are willing to stitch together from several subscriptions.

Organic keywords

Which queries each competitor ranks for, at what position, and how much traffic that likely sends. This is the base layer.

Keyword gaps

Queries where competitors rank and you do not. This turns research into a content plan.

Backlinks and link gaps

Which sites link to competitors but not to you. This turns research into an outreach list.

Traffic

How much visitor traffic a competitor gets and from which channels. Estimates vary between tools, so treat them as direction, not exact counts.

Paid search

Which ads competitors run, on which keywords, and for how long. Long-running ads usually mean a profitable keyword.

AI visibility

How often competitors are mentioned or cited in AI answers compared with you. This is the newest layer and the one most older tools lack.

The broadest competitor view in one login

Starts atPro from about $140/mo
Free trialSemrush One from $199/mo
Best jobAll-in-one CI

Semrush is the broadest competitor research tool we know of, and it is the one we would start with. A single competitor domain can be looked at from every angle in the same subscription: organic keywords, backlinks, paid ads, traffic estimates, content and, now, AI visibility.

The core of the Semrush SEO Toolkit for competitor work is a handful of reports. Domain Overview gives a quick profile. Organic Research lists the keywords a competitor ranks for and how that has changed over time. Advertising Research shows their ad copy and keyword history. Keyword Gap and Backlink Gap compare up to five domains side by side and show the opportunities you are missing. Semrush One adds the AI layer so you can benchmark your brand against competitors in AI answers: how often each of you is mentioned, in what tone, and for which prompts. Semrush One starts at $199 per month, the SEO Toolkit alone starts at about $140 per month, and the standalone AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 per month per domain.

Strengths

  • One login for keywords, links, ads, traffic and AI visibility
  • A large keyword database
  • Easy side-by-side gap reports

Limits

  • Traffic estimates for total visits are less precise than Similarweb
  • Some data sits in separate toolkits, so check what your plan includes
  • It is more tool than a solo founder needs
What it covers:Organic Research, Keyword Gap, Backlink Gap, Advertising Research, AI visibility
Standout data:Keywords, links, ads, traffic, AI share of voice
Best for:SEO teams, agencies and marketers who want one place for competitor research

Why teams pick Semrush:

  • Most complete single view on this list
  • Gap reports turn research into a backlog
  • AI share of voice is in the same login if you take Semrush One
2

Strongest option for backlink analysis

Starts atFrom about $129/mo
Free trialCheck current trial
Best jobBacklinks

Ahrefs is the strongest option for backlink analysis. Site Explorer shows a competitor's backlinks, referring domains and top pages. Content Gap and Link Intersect reports show keywords and linking sites you are missing. Its crawler index is large and refreshed often, which is why many link builders prefer it.

It covers organic keywords and traffic estimates well, but paid search data is thinner than Semrush or SpyFu. For AI visibility it offers Brand Radar as a separate add-on. Plans start at around $129 per month.

Strengths

  • Backlink depth
  • Content gap and link intersect
  • Clean interface

Limits

  • Weaker on paid ads
  • AI tracking costs extra
What it covers:Site Explorer, Content Gap, Link Intersect, Brand Radar add-on
Standout data:Backlinks, keywords, traffic estimates
Best for:Link building and content teams

Why teams pick Ahrefs:

  • Best backlink index on this list
  • Gap reports are built for outreach
  • Already the daily tool for many link teams
3

PromptRush

promptrush.ai

Full disclosure: this is ours - competitor share of voice inside AI answers

Starts at$19/mo (Lite, 25 prompts)
Free trialFree instant report, no card
Best jobAI visibility

Full disclosure: PromptRush is our product. It does not replace Semrush or Ahrefs for keyword gaps, backlinks or ads. It answers a newer competitor question those suites still treat as an add-on: which prompts mention a named rival and skip you, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

That is useful after you already know who ranks in the blue links. A rival can lose the Google top three and still win the AI answer. PromptRush turns that into a prompt list you can act on. It will not tell you their paid-search history or their referring domains. Use it as the AI layer, not as the only competitor tool.

Strengths

  • Free instant visibility report before you sign up
  • Published self-serve pricing from $19/month
  • Daily prompt scans across the main AI answer surfaces

Limits

  • Not a rank tracker, citation manager, or full SEO suite
  • Claude tracking is a paid add-on

Full disclosure: PromptRush is our product. We score it on the same criteria as every other tool here, including the jobs it does not do.

What teams report
What it covers:Prompt tracking, AI mention monitoring, competitive prompt analysis, citation sources
Standout data:ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode
Best for:Teams that already have a suite and need competitor AI share of voice

Why teams pick PromptRush:

  • Shows the exact prompts a named competitor wins
  • Cheaper than adding an enterprise AI visibility contract
  • Honest about the jobs it does not do
4

Similarweb

similarweb.com

Total traffic and audience specialist

Starts atFrom about $125/mo
Free trialLimited free tier
Best jobTraffic / market

Similarweb is the traffic specialist. It estimates total visits to a website across direct, search, referral, social and paid channels, and shows audience overlap, top referring sites and engagement metrics. If your question is how big is this competitor, really, and where does their traffic come from, Similarweb answers it better than an SEO suite.

It is weaker as an SEO tool. Backlink data is limited compared with Ahrefs or Semrush, and keyword data is not its focus. Many teams use it alongside an SEO suite rather than instead of one. A limited free tier is available, and paid plans start at roughly $125 per month in cited 2026 comparisons, rising steeply for the full feature set.

Strengths

  • Total traffic estimates
  • Channel mix
  • Audience overlap
  • Market-level views

Limits

  • Thin on backlinks and keyword depth
  • Expensive at higher tiers
What it covers:Traffic estimates, channel mix, audience overlap
Standout data:Total visits across channels
Best for:Market research, investor and strategy work, and benchmarking against large competitors

Why teams pick Similarweb:

  • Best total-traffic picture on this list
  • Shows channel mix, not only search
  • Useful when the SEO suite traffic number feels thin
5

Paid search history on a budget

Starts atFrom about $39-49/mo
Free trialCheck current trial
Best jobPaid search

SpyFu built its name on paid search. It shows the keywords competitors have bought over many years and the ad copy they have tested. That history is useful: an ad that has run for years usually points to a keyword that makes money.

It also has organic keyword and backlink reports, though they are less deep than Semrush or Ahrefs. It is one of the cheaper options, with plans starting at roughly $39 to $49 per month. It has no AI visibility features.

Strengths

  • Long ad history
  • Low price
  • Simple interface

Limits

  • Less depth on organic and links
  • No AI data
What it covers:Paid search history, organic keywords, basic backlinks
Standout data:Ad copy and keyword history
Best for:Small teams running paid search on a budget

Why teams pick SpyFu:

  • Years of ad history
  • Low entry price
  • Simple enough for a first paid-search audit
6

SE Ranking

seranking.com

Mid-priced all-in-one with AI tracking included

Starts atMid-range, check site
Free trialCheck current trial
Best jobAgency all-in-one

SE Ranking is a mid-priced all-in-one with competitor research, rank tracking, site audits and an AI visibility tracker. Agency features such as white-label reports are included. It is a credible alternative to Semrush when budget matters more than data depth.

Its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than the two big suites, so competitor research in large or very competitive markets is less detailed. For local and small-business work the gap rarely matters.

Strengths

  • Value
  • Agency reporting
  • AI tracking included

Limits

  • Smaller data sets
What it covers:Competitor research, rank tracking, site audits, AI visibility
Standout data:Keywords, links, ads, AI tracking
Best for:Small agencies and in-house teams on a tighter budget

Why teams pick SE Ranking:

  • Broad feature set without suite pricing
  • White-label reports
  • AI tracking is not a separate add-on
7

Moz Pro

moz.com

Link metrics and a simple first suite

Starts atFrom about $50-100/mo
Free trialCheck current trial
Best jobLinks / beginners

Moz Pro is known for Domain Authority and link metrics. Link Explorer, Keyword Explorer and rank tracking cover the basics of competitor research, and the interface is approachable for beginners. Plans start at roughly $50 to $100 per month.

Its data set is smaller than Semrush or Ahrefs, it has little on paid search and it has no AI visibility tracking. It remains a fair pick for teams that value its link metrics and simple reporting.

Strengths

  • Link metrics
  • Easy to learn

Limits

  • Smaller index
  • No ads or AI data
What it covers:Link Explorer, Keyword Explorer, rank tracking
Standout data:Domain Authority and link metrics
Best for:Beginners and small teams focused on links

Why teams pick Moz Pro:

  • Approachable interface
  • DA is still a common reporting language
  • Lower price than the two big suites
8

Crayon

crayon.co

Product and sales competitive intel, not SEO

Starts atQuote only
Free trialSales demo
Best jobProduct / sales CI

Crayon is a different kind of tool. It does not research keywords. It tracks what competitors change: website copy, pricing pages, product pages, messaging, reviews and press. It turns those changes into alerts and battlecards for sales and product marketing teams.

If your competitive question is what did they just launch and how should sales respond, Crayon fits. If your question is which keywords do they rank for, it does not. Pricing is by quote and aimed at companies with a sales team.

Strengths

  • Change tracking
  • Battlecards
  • Sales enablement

Limits

  • Not an SEO tool
  • Quote-only pricing
What it covers:Change tracking, alerts, battlecards
Standout data:Website, pricing, product and press changes
Best for:B2B product marketing and sales teams

Why teams pick Crayon:

  • Tracks launches and copy changes
  • Outputs sales can use
  • Solves a job SEO suites ignore
9

BuiltWith

builtwith.com

Technology stack lookup

Starts atFree lookups, paid from about $295/mo
Free trialFree lookups
Best jobTech stack

BuiltWith tells you what technology a competitor's site runs on: CMS, e-commerce platform, analytics, ad pixels, payment tools. That is useful for sales prospecting, understanding how rivals are built and spotting when they change platforms.

It is narrow, but nothing else on this list does it as well. Basic lookups are free, and paid plans start at roughly $295 per month.

Strengths

  • Technology detection
  • Lists of sites using a given tool

Limits

  • No SEO or traffic analysis
What it covers:Tech stack detection and prospect lists
Standout data:CMS, analytics, pixels, payments
Best for:Sales prospecting and technical benchmarking

Why teams pick BuiltWith:

  • Answers what are they built on
  • Free lookups for light use
  • Useful next to, not instead of, an SEO suite

A 30-minute competitor analysis with Semrush

This is the routine we would run on a new project. It assumes you have a Semrush subscription and a short list of three to five competitors. If you are starting from scratch, the Semrush SEO Toolkit includes everything in steps one to five.

Minutes 0-5: Pick the right competitors. Open Domain Overview for your site and check the Competitors tab in Organic Research. Search competitors are not always the businesses you think of as rivals. A blog or a marketplace can outrank you for the queries you care about. Choose three to five domains that overlap on keywords you want.

Minutes 5-10: Read their organic profile. In Organic Research, look at each competitor's top pages and top keywords. Note which page types bring the most traffic: product pages, comparisons, guides, tools. This tells you what format wins in your market.

Minutes 10-17: Run Keyword Gap. Enter your domain and up to four competitors. Filter to Missing keywords, which competitors rank for and you do not, and Weak, where you rank but below them. Sort by volume and by keyword difficulty. Export the keywords where two or more competitors rank, since those are proven topics. This is your content backlog.

Minutes 17-23: Run Backlink Gap. Use the same set of domains. Look at sites that link to two or more competitors but not to you. Those are the best outreach targets: they already link to this type of content. Filter out spammy domains and shortlist ten to twenty.

Minutes 23-27: Check their ads. Open Advertising Research for each competitor. Look at the ad copy and landing pages. Ads that have run a long time signal commercial keywords worth ranking for organically.

Minutes 27-30: Benchmark AI visibility. If you have Semrush One or the AI Visibility Toolkit, open the Brand Performance report and compare your brand with the same competitors. Note which prompts mention them and not you, and which sources AI platforms cite. Add the missing prompts to your content backlog.

Save the output as three lists: keywords to target, sites to pitch, prompts to win. That is a plan you can start on the same day.

Free vs paid

Free tools can answer simple questions. Google itself shows who ranks. Google Search Console covers your own data. Free tiers from Semrush, Similarweb, Ubersuggest and others let you run a handful of lookups a day. Manually asking ChatGPT or Perplexity a few questions shows who gets mentioned.

Free tools stop being enough when you need to repeat the work or compare more than one competitor. Limits on daily lookups, data exports and the number of domains make real analysis slow. Paid tools also give you history, which free ones rarely do: how a competitor's rankings moved after a site change, or when they started investing in a topic.

A practical rule: if competitor research is something you do once, use free tiers. If you do it monthly, or for clients, pay for one good suite and cover the gaps with a free tool or a cheap specialist. For most marketing teams the first paid tool should be a full suite such as Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking, not a narrow specialist.

Which one should you pick

If you want one tool that covers competitor keywords, links, ads, traffic and AI visibility, start with the Semrush SEO Toolkit, or choose Semrush One to add AI benchmarking. If your priority is backlinks, Ahrefs is a strong second. If you need market-level traffic data, add Similarweb. If you sell B2B and need to track what rivals change, look at Crayon. Start with a short list of three to five real competitors and run the 30-minute routine above before you buy anything else.

FAQ

For most teams it is a full suite. Semrush covers keywords, links, ads, traffic and AI visibility in one place. Ahrefs is the strongest pick if backlinks are your priority.

Similarweb is the most detailed for total website traffic and channel mix. For search traffic specifically, Semrush and Ahrefs are both solid.

Yes, for light use. Google, free tiers of the major tools and manual checks in AI assistants cover basics. For regular analysis across several competitors, paid tools save time and give history.

Use a keyword gap report. In Semrush it is called Keyword Gap, and in Ahrefs it is Content Gap. Enter your domain and your competitors, then filter to keywords they rank for and you do not.

Use an AI visibility tool that reports share of voice across prompts. Semrush One and the AI Visibility Toolkit compare your brand with competitors across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

A full review every quarter, with lighter monthly checks on rankings, new content and backlinks. Review AI visibility monthly, since answers change often.
