What is the best SEO agency for the US market?

There is no single best SEO agency for the US market, and any ranked list claiming otherwise is sorted by who paid for the placement. The right answer depends on your model: enterprise, B2B SaaS, ecommerce, local, or AI visibility. Each category rewards a different kind of agency, and the wrong category is a more expensive mistake than the wrong price.

The US search market is the most competitive and the most fragmented in the world. Roughly 20,000 agencies sell SEO here, from two-person shops running local clients to holding-company practices with 300 people and a procurement process. Asking which one is best is like asking which car is best. The honest answer is a question back: best at what, for whom, at what budget?

This page is a decision framework, not a leaderboard. If you want a survey of named providers, our roundup of the best SEO agencies covers who does what. What follows is how to work out which category you belong in before you take a single sales call - because picking the wrong category wastes more money than overpaying inside the right one.

Why is there no single best SEO agency for the US market?

Because the skills that win an enterprise migration are not the skills that win local map packs, and the agency that is genuinely excellent at one is usually mediocre at the other. Specialisation is real in this industry, and it is the main reason referrals go wrong.

A B2B SaaS agency spends its time on product-led content, comparison pages and sales-cycle attribution. A local agency spends its time on Google Business Profiles, review velocity and service-area pages. Both call themselves SEO agencies. Neither would perform well doing the other's job, and both will happily take your money to try.

Ranked lists ignore this entirely. They sort by domain authority, by review count, or by whoever bought the placement, and none of those correlate with whether the agency has solved your specific problem before. The useful sort order is category first, then evidence within that category.

Treat any 'top 10 SEO agencies' list that does not segment by business model as an advertisement. The segmentation is the entire value of the recommendation.

What are the agency categories, and which one fits you?

Five categories cover almost the whole US market. Find your row, then evaluate only agencies that live in it.

The five agency categories in the US market, the businesses each one serves well, and the evidence that proves an agency really belongs in that category rather than claiming it.

CategoryFitsTypical monthly spendProof they actually do this
Enterprise practice1,000+ page sites, multiple markets, heavy stakeholder governance$20,000 - $60,000Named a migration they ran without traffic loss, and the engineering process behind it
B2B and SaaS specialistSoftware, services, long sales cycles, pipeline-based reporting$6,000 - $20,000Reports on pipeline and demo requests, not sessions; knows your buyer's job title
Ecommerce specialistCatalogues, marketplaces, seasonal demand, margin-sensitive growth$5,000 - $25,000Talks about faceted navigation, category templates and revenue per session unprompted
Local and multi-locationService businesses, clinics, franchises, anything with a service radius$1,000 - $6,000 per location tierShows map pack movement and review programs, not blog counts
AEO and AI visibility specialistBrands losing shortlist position inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews$4,000 - $20,000Opens a live prompt-and-citation dashboard on request

Most businesses sit cleanly in one row. If you sit in two - a SaaS company with 40 locations, say - pick the row where the revenue is, and treat the other as a scoped add-on rather than trying to find one agency that is excellent at both. If none of the rows feel right yet, start with what an SEO agency actually does before shortlisting anyone.

Which agency is best for enterprise SEO in the US?

The one that can survive your internal process. At enterprise scale the hard part is rarely the SEO knowledge - it is getting 40 changes through six teams, a legal review and a release train without anything breaking.

Evaluate enterprise agencies on governance rather than tactics. Can they write acceptance criteria your engineers will accept? Do they have a named person who attends your sprint planning? Have they run a platform migration where traffic held? Those three answers predict outcomes far better than any keyword analysis in the pitch deck.

Budget is the other filter. Enterprise programs cost $20,000 to $60,000 a month because coordination consumes real hours, and the pricing logic is broken down in our guide to enterprise SEO pricing. If you want to see what that delivery model includes, enterprise SEO services describes the pod structure most credible providers use.

  • Ask which of their clients gave them direct access to a Jira board, and what happened
  • Ask how they handle a release that breaks canonical tags on a Friday afternoon
  • Ask for the internationalisation story if you run more than two markets

Which agency is best for B2B SaaS?

One that reports on pipeline instead of sessions and understands that 200 visits from the right job title beats 20,000 from a definition post. B2B SaaS SEO is a demand-quality problem disguised as a traffic problem.

The tell is how they talk about content. Weak SaaS agencies propose top-of-funnel volume: what is X, how to do Y, 30 posts a quarter. Strong ones start with comparison pages, alternatives pages, integration pages and use-case pages, because those convert, and because they are the pages AI assistants pull from when someone asks for a shortlist of tools.

Also check whether they can work with your product marketing team without a fight. SaaS content that ranks but misrepresents the product creates churn, and the agencies that avoid that are the ones that ask for product access in week one and actually use it.

Which agency is best for ecommerce?

One that treats category and faceted pages as the main event and reports revenue per session rather than rankings. Product pages are commodity work. Category architecture is where ecommerce SEO is won or lost.

Ask how they handle out-of-stock products, seasonal collections, duplicate variants and parameter bloat. Those four questions expose whether an agency has run real catalogues or has only written blog posts for merchants. A good ecommerce agency will also tell you which products are not worth optimising because the margin cannot support the work.

The second filter is marketplace context. If Amazon, Walmart or Etsy account for half your revenue, an agency that only thinks about your own domain is planning around a fraction of your demand. Say so on the first call and watch how the strategy changes.

Which agency is best for local and multi-location businesses?

A local specialist, almost always - and usually a smaller one than you expect. Local SEO rewards operational consistency across listings, reviews and location pages far more than it rewards content volume or clever link acquisition.

The economics matter here. A single-location service business does not need a $10,000 retainer, and any agency proposing one is selling a program built for someone else. What you need is profile management, review generation, correct service-area pages, and enough technical hygiene that the site loads fast on a phone.

Multi-location changes the calculation. At 20 or more locations you need templating, bulk listing management and a way to stop franchisees from creating duplicate profiles. That is closer to an operations problem than a marketing one, and the agencies that are good at it will describe processes rather than tactics.

Which agency is best for AI search visibility?

A specialist that can already show you a live dashboard of prompts, engines, citations and dates. In this category, measurement capability is the qualification - everything else is content work most competent agencies can do.

The demand is new and the supply is thin. Every agency added an AI page to their site in the last eighteen months, but very few built the sampling infrastructure behind it. Tools like PromptRush exist specifically to reverse-engineer which prompts trigger competitor mentions, and an agency that runs something like it can tell you within a week where you stand. One that cannot will send you a schema audit and call it AEO. The metric-by-metric standard is in which agency is best for AEO reporting.

If the vocabulary is still fuzzy, what is AEO sorts out the terms. For providers, the AEO and GEO agency roundup maps the specialist end of the market, and our own approach is described under AEO services and AI SEO agency.

Should you hire a US agency or an offshore team?

Hire in the US when the work needs cultural judgement, journalist relationships, or same-timezone collaboration with your team. Go offshore for well-specified production work. The mistake is buying strategy offshore to save money and then paying twice to fix it.

Where each model earns its cost. This is about the type of work, not about talent, and plenty of offshore teams outperform US agencies on the rows they own.

Type of workBetter bought in the USFine to buy offshore
Strategy and prioritisationYes - needs market context and direct access to your executivesRarely worth the coordination cost
Digital PR and outreachYes - depends on relationships with US journalists and editorsOnly for low-tier placements you probably should not buy
Content productionFor high-stakes commercial pages and thought leadershipYes, with strong briefs and a US editor reviewing
Technical implementationWhen it touches your release process directlyYes, when the tickets are specified tightly
Reporting and data engineeringOptionalYes, this is where offshore teams often outperform

Blended agencies are now the norm: US strategy and account leadership, delivery distributed. That model is fine as long as it is disclosed. What is not fine is paying US senior rates for work being produced by someone you were never told about.

What should you pay a US-market SEO agency?

Between $2,500 and $15,000 a month for most companies, and $20,000 upward for enterprise. Price is the least useful sorting variable, but it does set a floor on what is deliverable.

Sanity-check the spend against the opportunity

Annual opportunity = target monthly organic conversions x average deal value x 12
Sensible retainer ceiling = annual opportunity x 0.10 / 12

Target monthly organic conversions means the realistic number twelve months out, not today's. The 10% figure is a rule of thumb for how much of the first-year upside to reinvest in acquiring it. If the ceiling comes out below $2,000, buy an audit and a consultant instead of a retainer.

Below roughly $1,500 a month, the hours cannot fund the four workstreams a program needs. Above $20,000, you should expect named specialists and a governance model, not a bigger version of the same package. If the number lands awkwardly in between, a scoped SEO audit or a few months of SEO consulting will tell you what you actually need to buy.

How do you choose between two agencies that both look good?

Score them on the same criteria, weight the criteria before you see the proposals, and give heavy weight to category evidence and measurement. Deciding the weights after the pitches is how people talk themselves into the better salesperson.

A weighting that works for most buyers. Adjust the weights up front, then score each agency 1 to 5 per row and multiply. Two rows are effectively vetoes: a 1 or 2 on category evidence or measurement should end the conversation regardless of the total.

CriterionWeightWhat a 5 looks like
Category evidence30%Two dated case studies from your exact model and market
Measurement capability25%Live dashboard covering organic and AI citations for a current client
Team you actually get20%Named strategist and specialists, with their time allocation in writing
First 90 days plan15%Specific to your site, with dependencies and owners identified
Commercial terms10%Clear scope boundaries, fair exit, no outcome guarantees

Then check the references yourself, and ask the reference one question the agency did not prepare them for: what did they get wrong, and how did they handle it. The complete interview script and the answers that should worry you are in how to choose an SEO agency.

A two-week shortlisting process

Vendor selection expands to fill whatever time you give it. Two weeks is enough if you run it as a project rather than a series of drifting calls.

  • Days 1-3: decide your category, write down your weights, and pull your own baseline numbers so you can grade their diagnosis
  • Days 4-6: send the same five questions to five agencies and drop anyone who answers with a generic capability deck
  • Days 7-10: run three calls, each with a live dashboard walkthrough rather than a slide presentation
  • Days 11-14: score, call references, negotiate scope and exit terms, sign one

Pulling your own baseline first is the step everyone skips and the one that pays off most. When you already know your indexation problems and which competitors outrank you, you can tell within ten minutes which agency did their homework and which one ran your domain through a tool an hour before the call.

So which agency is best for you?

The one that has already solved your specific problem, can prove it with dated evidence, and will tell you which parts of your goal are unrealistic. That agency exists in every category and it is never the one at the top of a generic ranked list.

Work out your category first, then shortlist three agencies inside it, then score them the same way. If the honest answer turns out to be that you are not ready for a retainer at all, that case is made here. More of these questions are answered in the answers library, and if you want a read on your specific situation, request a proposal and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right category for you.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best SEO agency in the US?
There is no single best one. The US market splits into five categories - enterprise, B2B and SaaS, ecommerce, local and multi-location, and AI visibility specialists - and the best agency is the one with dated evidence inside your category. Ranked lists that ignore business model are advertising, not advice.
How much do US SEO agencies charge?
Most charge $2,500 to $15,000 a month in 2026. Local single-location work runs $1,000 to $6,000, B2B SaaS and ecommerce programs sit around $5,000 to $25,000, and enterprise practices with governance and multi-market scope charge $20,000 to $60,000.
Is a US agency better than an offshore team?
For strategy, digital PR and anything needing US cultural judgement or journalist relationships, yes. For tightly specified content production, technical implementation and reporting, offshore teams are often better value. Most agencies now blend both, which is fine as long as they tell you.
What size agency should I hire?
Match the agency to your governance, not your ego. A single-location business gets more from a five-person local specialist than from a national brand. An enterprise with six product teams needs an agency that can staff a pod and attend sprint planning without falling over.
How do I verify an agency's case studies?
Ask for dates, the starting baseline and the specific market. Then ask to speak to the client and ask that client what the agency got wrong. Anonymous percentage growth with no timeframe is unverifiable, and agencies with real results are comfortable putting you on a call.
Should I hire a specialist agency for AI search visibility?
If AI visibility is the main reason you are hiring, yes. The qualifying test is whether they can open a live dashboard showing prompts, engines, dates and citation counts. Generalist agencies adding AEO as an upsell usually deliver schema markup and call it AI optimisation.
