Google AI Overviews now sit above most commercial results, and most teams still cannot answer a basic question: is our brand in them, or are we not? Classic rank trackers tell you where a page sits in the blue links. They say nothing about whether Google's AI summary quoted you, cited a competitor, or skipped the topic entirely.
This guide compares nine tools that close that gap. We grouped them by what they actually do, listed real entry prices, and kept the verdicts short. Semrush comes first because it covers AI Overview data, full rank tracking and competitor benchmarking from one login. PromptRush is second because it is built only for prompt-level citation tracking, including Google AI Overviews. The rest are strong in specific situations, and we say where.
If you already run a broader AI visibility programme, our AEO and GEO tools roundup covers the wider category. For the measurement method behind these dashboards, see how to measure AI visibility.

Why AI Overview tracking matters now
An AI Overview changes what a search result page is. Instead of ten links, the user often sees a written answer with a handful of cited sources. If your page is one of those sources, you get a visible mention. If it is not, you can rank in position two below the Overview and still lose most of the attention.
The result is not a position
An AI Overview either cites you or it does not. There is no position 4. You need presence, how often, for which queries, and next to whom.
Answers change
The same query can return a different Overview next week. A one-off manual check tells you almost nothing. You need repeated checks over time.
Rankings and citations do not always match
Pages that rank in the top ten are often cited, but not always. Some pages are cited from outside the top ten. Track both sides together.
Click-through is the stake
Several SEO firms have reported lower click-through on queries where an AI Overview appears. Visibility inside the Overview is now part of the job.
Prompt variants matter
People phrase questions as full sentences, and the Overview often answers those differently from short queries.
History beats snapshots
Record the date and keep history. You are looking for a trend over weeks, not a one-day flip.

One platform for AI Overview data and classic SEO
Semrush is the one tool on this list that covers the full loop: where you rank, whether the AI Overview cites you, and how that compares with your competitors. For most teams that already do SEO, that is the deciding factor.
There are two ways in. The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is a standalone product at $99 per month per domain. It tracks 25 prompts by default and reports on brand mentions and citations across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It includes a Visibility Overview report, a Brand Performance report with sentiment and share of voice against competitors, Prompt Research to find the questions worth tracking, and an AI readiness site audit. The second route is Semrush One, which bundles the full SEO Toolkit with AI visibility. The Starter plan is $199 per month and includes 50 tracked prompts, 500 keyword positions and five projects. The reason to take the bundle is Position Tracking. Semrush flags where an AI Overview appears for your tracked keywords, so you can see which of your priority terms have one, whether you are cited, and how your classic ranking relates to it.
Strengths
- AI and classic data in one place
- Competitor benchmarking and a large keyword database
- Prompt research to decide what to track
Limits
- The standalone AI Toolkit is capped at 25 prompts and one domain at the base price
- Per-prompt cost is higher than the cheap specialist tools
- The full suite is more than a team needs if it only wants AI monitoring
Why teams pick Semrush:
- One login for ranks and AI citations
- Position Tracking shows which keywords trigger an Overview
- Competitor share of voice sits next to classic SEO data
Full disclosure: this is ours - prompt-level Overview and assistant tracking
Full disclosure before anything else: PromptRush is our own product, and it is included here against the same criteria as every other entry, including the jobs it does not win. PromptRush is a prompt monitoring tool built around one question: which specific prompts cause Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to mention your brand, and which hand that same question to a competitor instead.
Rather than a generic visibility score, it runs daily scans with the prompts your buyers actually type, then reports where you appear, where a named competitor wins the same prompt, and which cited sources are feeding the answer. Lite starts at $19 a month for one project and twenty-five prompts. Growth is $99 a month for two projects and one hundred fifty prompts. It is the wrong fit if you want rank tracking and technical audits in the same login, since PromptRush does one job rather than several. That is also why it sits behind Semrush on this list.
Strengths
- Free instant visibility report before you sign up
- Published self-serve pricing from $19/month
- Daily prompt scans across the main AI answer surfaces
Limits
- Not a rank tracker, citation manager, or full SEO suite
- Claude tracking is a paid add-on
Full disclosure: PromptRush is our product. We score it on the same criteria as every other tool here, including the jobs it does not do.
What teams reportWhy teams pick PromptRush:
- Built only for prompt tracking, not a bolted-on SEO tab
- Free report before you pay
- Named competitor wins on the same prompt, not a blended score
Closest all-in-one alternative on a mid-range budget
SE Ranking is the closest all-in-one alternative to Semrush. It has rank tracking, site audits, competitor research and an AI visibility tracker that covers Google AI Overviews and other AI engines. It is popular with agencies because pricing is friendlier than the big suites and white-label reporting is included.
The trade-off is depth. Its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than Semrush or Ahrefs, so competitor research is less thorough for large or highly competitive niches. For a small agency or an in-house team on a budget, it is a sensible pick.
Strengths
- Good value
- Agency reporting
- AI tracking alongside classic SEO
Limits
- Smaller data sets than the two largest suites
Why teams pick SE Ranking:
- Friendlier pricing than the big suites
- White-label reporting included
- AI tracking in the same product as ranks
AI mentions tied to the strongest backlink index
Brand Radar is Ahrefs' AI visibility product. It reports how often your brand and your competitors appear in AI Overviews and in answers from chat-style assistants, and it ties that to the rest of Ahrefs: Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker. It is sold as an add-on to an Ahrefs plan, so it makes the most sense if you already live in Ahrefs.
Ahrefs is strongest on backlink data, and if your question is which sites that cite my competitors should I be pitching, Brand Radar plus Site Explorer answers it well. It is less of a standalone AI tracker than the specialist tools, and the add-on pricing stacks on top of the base plan.
Strengths
- Backlink and content-gap data next to AI mentions
- Strong index
Limits
- Add-on pricing
- Less useful if you do not already use Ahrefs
Why teams pick Ahrefs Brand Radar:
- AI mentions sit next to the backlink index you already trust
- Good for pitching sites that already cite competitors
- Rank Tracker is already in the same login
Enterprise AI search programmes
Profound is built for large brands running AI search as a formal program. It monitors visibility across several AI platforms, shows which sources the models cite, and offers workflows for content teams. It has self-serve entry plans under $100 per month and enterprise contracts on quote.
It does not do classic rank tracking, so you will pair it with another tool. For a small team, the enterprise features are more than needed. For a brand with many markets, products and stakeholders, the reporting and governance features are the point.
Strengths
- Depth of AI platform coverage and reporting
- Enterprise workflows
Limits
- No classic rank tracking
- Enterprise pricing climbs fast
Why teams pick Profound:
- Built for formal AI search programmes
- Source-level citation reporting
- Governance that a large brand actually needs
Lowest-cost first look at real citation data
Otterly.AI is the cheapest way to see real data. The Lite plan is $29 per month for 15 prompts, Standard is $189 for 100 prompts and Premium is $489 for 400. It covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with AI Mode, Gemini and Claude available as paid add-ons.
It is a monitor, not a platform. You get prompt tracking and a clear view of citations, and you do the analysis elsewhere. For a founder or a small team that wants to look before committing to anything larger, it is hard to beat on price.
Strengths
- Low entry price
- Simple interface
- Unlimited team members
Limits
- Prompt caps on lower tiers
- Extra engines cost more
- No classic rank data
Why teams pick Otterly.AI:
- Cheapest credible start
- Clear citation view
- Unlimited seats on the monitor
Mid-size teams that need many seats
Peec AI sits between Otterly and the enterprise tools. It is clean, report-focused and includes unlimited seats on every plan, which matters for agencies and larger marketing teams. Pricing moved to euro-denominated plans in 2026, starting at roughly EUR 70 to 95 per month depending on billing, with Pro and Advanced tiers above that.
It tracks AI answers well, including Google AI Overviews, and shows which sources are cited. It does not do classic rank tracking and it reports rather than recommends, so you decide what to change.
Strengths
- Clear dashboards
- Unlimited seats
- Solid prompt depth for the price
Limits
- Extra models cost more
- No classic rank tracking
Why teams pick Peec AI:
- Unlimited seats on every plan
- Clean reporting for clients
- Enough prompt depth without enterprise pricing
Rank tracking with a light AI layer
Nightwatch started as a rank tracker and has added AI search tracking on top. That makes it a reasonable option for teams that mostly want accurate, frequent rank data with AI Overview visibility included, without buying a full suite.
Its AI features are lighter than the specialist tools. You will see whether an AI Overview is present and whether you appear, but you will not get the same depth of competitor and source analysis.
Strengths
- Rank tracking first
- Light AI layer
- Approachable pricing
Limits
- Less depth on AI citation analysis
Why teams pick Nightwatch:
- Rank data is the product
- AI layer included without a second vendor
- Lower entry than a full suite
Fixes how AI systems read your pages
Scrunch is the odd one out. Beyond tracking visibility, it focuses on how AI systems read your site, and offers a layer that serves AI-friendly versions of pages. All major engines are included on each plan. Entry pricing sits around $250 to $300 per month. Sitecore announced an acquisition of Scrunch in June 2026, so confirm the product roadmap and pricing before committing.
It is a good fit when your problem is not are we cited but AI keeps getting our pages wrong. For plain Overview monitoring, it is more than most teams need.
Strengths
- Goes beyond reporting into fixing how pages are read
Limits
- Higher entry price
- Ownership change adds roadmap uncertainty
Why teams pick Scrunch AI:
- Tracking plus a fix layer
- All major engines included
- Useful when pages are being misread, not just missed
What to track: presence, citations, competitors
Whichever tool you pick, set up the same three views. Everything else is noise until these are in place.
1. Presence. For each priority query, does an AI Overview appear, and are you mentioned in it? Track this as a percentage across your keyword set, not as a yes or no on a single query. A move from 12 percent to 20 percent across 200 queries is a real signal. A single query flipping is not.
2. Citations. Which of your URLs get cited, and for which queries? This tells you which pages the Overview treats as authoritative. Check whether the cited page is the one you would have chosen. It is often an older blog post rather than the commercial page.
3. Competitors. Who is cited when you are not? List the three to five domains that appear most often. Look at what those pages do differently: structure, depth, original data, freshness. Competitor benchmarking is where AI tracking turns into a to-do list.
Add two supporting checks. First, track prompt variants, not only keywords. People phrase questions as full sentences, and the Overview often answers those differently from short queries. Second, record the date and keep history. You are looking for a trend over weeks, not a snapshot.
Turning the data into more citations
Tracking does nothing on its own. Here is the sequence we would run on a first pass.
Start with queries where you rank but are not cited. These are the cheapest wins. You already have the ranking, so the page just needs to answer the question more directly. Add a short, plain-language answer near the top of the page, then back it with detail below.
Fix the structure of cited competitor pages that you lack. Compare your page with the cited ones. Look for clear headings that match the question, a defined answer in the first paragraph, tables where the topic is comparative, and a visible author and date. Copy the structure, not the wording.
Add something original. Overviews favor pages that say something sources do not already say. A small data set, a worked example, a pricing table you keep updated, or a clear opinion all help. Pages that repeat what ten others say tend to be summarized without a citation.
Keep important pages fresh. Update dates and facts on pages that are cited or close to being cited. Stale pricing and outdated screenshots hurt trust.
Check technical access. Make sure pages are indexable, load fast and are not blocked from crawlers. The AI readiness audit inside the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is a quick way to catch obvious blockers.
Recheck every two to four weeks. Changes to a page take time to show up. Do not rewrite a page twice in a month and then guess which edit mattered.
If you want one place to run the whole cycle, Semrush One combines Position Tracking with AI visibility reporting, so the same dashboard shows what you rank for, where an AI Overview appears and whether you are cited.
Which one should you pick
If you already do SEO and want AI Overview data next to your rankings, start with the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, or choose Semrush One if you also need the full SEO suite. If you only want prompt-level citation detail, PromptRush is the dedicated option. If you only want a low-cost first look, Otterly.AI is the easy entry. If you run an enterprise program, add Profound to the shortlist. Whatever you choose, track presence, citations and competitors, and review the trend monthly.

It is software that checks Google's AI-generated summaries for a set of queries or prompts on a schedule, and records whether your brand is mentioned or your pages are cited. Most also track other AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
Some classic trackers, including Semrush Position Tracking, flag whether an AI Overview appears for a keyword. A dedicated AI visibility tool goes further and tells you whether you are cited and how you compare with competitors.
For a small site, 25 to 50 prompts that cover your main products and questions is a workable start. Larger sites and agencies usually need hundreds. Pick prompts from real customer questions and your top converting keywords.
No. A page can rank well and not be cited, and a page ranking lower can be cited. That is why you track both together.
Daily or weekly collection is normal for the tool. Review the trend every two to four weeks. Individual days are noisy.
You can search manually and note what appears, which works for a handful of queries. It does not scale and gives you no history. For anything beyond a quick check, a tool pays for itself in time.
