8 Best SEO Companies in the Bay Area (2026)

The Bay Area has no shortage of SEO agencies, and the gap between the best and the rest is wide. Here are the eight worth shortlisting in 2026, from enterprise SEO firms to SaaS, retail media and local specialists.

Short answer: It depends on your stage and category. Victorious suits well-funded companies buying a retained, SEO-only program, Search Nurture suits brands that need search and retail media together, and The Business Rover suits SaaS and B2B brands that need Google rankings and AI visibility from the same team.

The Bay Area has no shortage of SEO agencies, and the gap between the best and the rest is wide. Some are built for enterprise brands with six-figure budgets, some for local businesses, and a growing number for SaaS companies that need visibility in AI assistants as much as in Google.

This list covers the SEO companies in San Francisco and the wider Bay Area worth shortlisting in 2026, and who each one fits.

One thing makes this market different from most: Bay Area buyers were early to AI assistants, and in software categories a meaningful share of vendor research now starts in ChatGPT or Perplexity rather than Google. That has widened the gap between agencies that measure AI visibility and agencies that only report rankings. We weighted for it below.

A second thing worth knowing before you read: "San Francisco SEO agency" is often a marketing claim rather than an address. We checked each company's own site rather than directory listings, and several of the best operators here are in Burlingame, Oakland, San Ramon or Austin, not the city. We say so in each entry, because it changes what you can expect from a kickoff meeting even when it changes nothing about the work.

Disclosure: we are on this list at number three. Nobody paid for placement, and where an agency's own claims did not hold up we have said that too.

How we chose

Verified location

We took headquarters from each company's own site, contact page or schema markup, not from Clutch or a directory, and we publish what we found even when it is not San Francisco.

Clear specialization

A category, stage or channel each agency is demonstrably strongest in. Generalist positioning alone did not qualify.

Public proof

Case studies, named clients or a strong independent review record that a buyer can verify without a sales call.

A credible AI search approach

Bay Area buyers use AI assistants heavily, so we favored agencies that can explain how they measure and improve visibility there.

Still trading

We checked that each agency is independent and active. Two names that appear on most competing lists have been acquired or wound down, so they are not here.

TL;DR - the eight Bay Area SEO companies and who each one fits

1.
Victorious - Retained, SEO-only programs for funded and enterprise companies
2.
Jives Media - One team across search, paid and creative
3.
The Business Rover - SEO and AI visibility run as one program
4.
AdLift - SEO, content and paid media run together
5.
Boomcycle Digital Marketing - A long-established local partner for East Bay and Tri-Valley businesses
6.
RankScience - A measurement-first take on SEO and AI search
7.
Search Nurture - Search and retail media for B2B tech and consumer brands
8.
CSTMR - Marketing built specifically for fintech, run from Austin

Quick comparison

Read this by stage and category rather than by rank. The spread here is unusually wide: one of these agencies publishes a monthly minimum that rules out most seed-stage startups, and another is built specifically for local small businesses.

#AgencyBest for
1VictoriousFunded and enterprise companies buying retained SEO
2Jives MediaMid-market companies wanting SEO, paid and creative together
3The Business RoverSaaS and B2B brands that want SEO plus AI visibility
4AdLiftConsumer and marketplace brands running SEO and paid together
5Boomcycle Digital MarketingBay Area small and mid-sized businesses
6RankScienceCompanies that want a measurement-first SEO and AI search partner
7Search NurtureSearch plus Amazon and retail media
8CSTMRFintech marketing, run from Austin

Two things stand out. First, the Bay Area is the one US market where SaaS and fintech specialists are common rather than rare, which is good news if you sell software and less relevant if you run a local service business. Second, several of these agencies have added AI search practices in the last two years, so ask what that practice actually does rather than assuming the label means the same thing everywhere.

Victorious

victorious.com

Retained, SEO-only programs for funded and enterprise companies

LocationSan Francisco, CA
Founded2013

Victorious is a San Francisco SEO agency founded in 2013, focused on enterprise and technical SEO, and it now sells answer engine optimization alongside it. It works with funded and enterprise companies on retained engagements, and its own site is unusually direct about the commitment: budget in the thousands per month and plan on a 12-month campaign before you judge it.

SEO-only is the point here rather than a limitation. An agency that does not also sell you paid media has no incentive to quietly move budget to the channel with faster reporting, and technical SEO on a large site genuinely rewards specialists. One oddity to raise on the call: their published minimum is inconsistent on their own website, with a San Francisco page saying at least $5,000 a month and the homepage saying $6,000. Neither figure is wrong exactly, but get your number in writing rather than assuming the lower one.

Services:Technical SEO, enterprise SEO, content strategy, link building, answer engine optimization
Best for:well-funded companies ready for a long-term, SEO-only program.
2

Jives Media

jivesmedia.com

One team across search, paid and creative

LocationSan Francisco Bay Area; no office address published on its site
Founded2012

Jives Media was founded in 2012 by Jonathan Ivester and runs full-funnel digital marketing: SEO and AI SEO, Google Ads, web design, video and social. It is a Google Premier Partner, which puts it in the top few per cent of agencies by Google Ads performance, and it carries a large independent review record. Its published work spans healthcare, legal, tech and non-profits.

The Premier Partner badge is worth more than most agency awards because Google grants it on measurable account performance rather than a submission. Where the picture gets fuzzier is location: their site says only that they are California-based, with no street address anywhere, and the San Francisco address attached to their name comes from third-party directories. Treat them as a Bay Area agency you will work with remotely and the fit question gets simpler.

Services:SEO, AI SEO, Google Ads and paid media, web design and development, social media
Best for:mid-market companies that want one team across search, paid and creative.
3

The Business Rover

thebusinessrover.com

SEO and AI visibility run as one program

LocationRemote, with team members in the US, Armenia and Germany
Founded2022
Team sizeAround 35

The Business Rover is an SEO and AI visibility agency with an in-house team of around 35 across strategy, technical SEO, native English content and link building, including team members in the US. It works with Bay Area clients remotely. Clients include Picsart, Krisp, Sift, Aikido and 5WPR.

It built its own AI citation tracking platform, PromptRush, to measure how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention a brand, and every engagement includes that tracking alongside technical SEO, content and links. That makes it a strong fit for SaaS companies whose buyers build vendor shortlists in AI assistants. See their San Francisco SEO services, the Silicon Valley page for earlier-stage and Peninsula companies, or the San Francisco GEO page if AI answers are the specific gap.

Services:Technical SEO, content strategy and production, link building and digital PR, generative engine optimization, AI visibility tracking, enterprise SEO
Best for:SaaS, B2B and enterprise brands that want Google rankings and AI visibility from the same team.

Why choose The Business Rover:

  • AI citation tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews in every engagement rather than as an add-on
  • Technical SEO built for modern stacks: JavaScript rendering, docs and subdomain sprawl, migrations
  • In-house delivery, so the people writing your content and building your links are employees rather than subcontractors
4

SEO, content and paid media run together

LocationBurlingame, CA
Founded2009

AdLift was founded in 2009 by Prashant Puri and Vivek Pahwa and works out of Burlingame with a large delivery team in India. Puri remains chief executive. It combines SEO, content and paid media, publishes work on AI search and LLM optimization, and its client roster has included PayPal, Shopify and Walmart.

The offshore delivery model is the thing to understand rather than the thing to worry about: it is why the rates are competitive, and it works well for content and technical execution at volume, as long as you have a senior US-based strategist who actually owns your account. Ask to name that person. One material change most lists have not caught: AdLift was acquired by the Indian agency group Liqvd Asia in March 2025, so the independent-boutique framing no longer applies. Their AI search material is real but reads as an emerging practice rather than a mature one, so ask what they would actually measure for you.

Services:SEO, AI search optimization, content marketing, paid media, analytics
Best for:consumer and marketplace brands that want SEO and paid run together.
5

Boomcycle Digital Marketing

boomcycle.com

A long-established local partner for East Bay and Tri-Valley businesses

LocationSan Ramon, CA, with an office in Pleasanton
Founded2003

Boomcycle was founded in 2003 by David Victor and works from San Ramon with a second office in Pleasanton. It runs SEO, local SEO, Google Ads, web design and content, and sells founder-led strategy with a team executing behind it, which is a reasonable pitch for a business that wants the person setting direction to be the person who answers the phone.

Longevity means something in this category. An agency that has been through several Google algorithm eras has seen shortcuts stop working, and that tends to produce more conservative, more durable advice. Two clarifications: this is an East Bay agency rather than a San Francisco one, roughly 35 miles from the city, and while the business dates to 2003 its Bay Area operation as it exists now consolidated later. If you are in the Tri-Valley that proximity is the selling point; if you are in SoMa it is a drive.

Services:SEO, local SEO, PPC, web design and development, content marketing
Best for:Bay Area small and mid-sized businesses that want a long-established local partner.
6

RankScience

rankscience.com

A measurement-first take on SEO and AI search

LocationSan Francisco, CA

RankScience is a San Francisco company that became known for a software-driven approach to SEO, including A/B testing changes to measure which ones actually moved rankings. It now presents itself as an SEO and AI search agency, pairing technical SEO, content and link building with generative engine optimization for ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.

The measurement instinct that came out of the testing product is the useful part, and it is rarer than it should be. Most SEO work ships on the assumption that a change helped, with no way to isolate whether it did. Worth knowing that the A/B testing software is no longer the pitch, so if experimentation specifically is what you want, ask what the current engagement actually involves rather than assuming the old product is still in it.

Services:Technical SEO, content strategy, link building, generative engine optimization and AI search visibility, local SEO
Best for:companies that want SEO and AI search visibility from one team and expect claims to be measured.
7

Search Nurture

searchnurture.com

Search and retail media for B2B tech and consumer brands

LocationOakland, CA, with a distributed team
Founded2017

Search Nurture was founded in 2017 by Spencer Padway and works out of Oakland with a distributed team. It stays on search: SEO, paid search and paid social, plus retail media on Amazon, Walmart and Instacart, split between B2B tech and consumer product brands.

The retail media capability is the genuinely distinctive part and the reason to shortlist them. Plenty of agencies will run your Google Ads; far fewer can run an Amazon and Walmart program alongside organic search and treat them as one demand problem, which is exactly the shape of a consumer brand selling through marketplaces. The caveat is scale. Their site describes a team in the teens, while their public professional profiles suggest a much smaller current headcount, so ask directly how many people would touch your account and who they are.

Services:SEO, paid search, paid social, retail media on Amazon, Walmart and Instacart, content
Best for:consumer and B2B tech brands that need organic search, paid search and marketplace advertising run as one program.

Marketing built specifically for fintech, run from Austin

LocationAustin, TX; serves Bay Area fintech clients

CSTMR works only with fintech and financial services companies, covering marketing, branding, web development and digital strategy, and it is SOC 2 Type 1 compliant. That compliance is not a vanity badge in this sector: it is often what lets a regulated client hand over analytics and customer data at all.

For a fintech, a specialist that already understands compliance review cycles saves months of explaining why a claim cannot ship as written. Worth correcting the record on geography, though, since most lists get it wrong: CSTMR's own site and schema give an Austin headquarters, and the Mission Street address circulating under its name appears only in third-party directories. They serve Bay Area clients, but they are not a San Francisco agency.

Services:Fintech marketing strategy, branding, SEO and content, paid acquisition, web development
Best for:fintech and financial services companies that want a specialist and do not need it local.

How to choose an SEO company in San Francisco

1. Match the agency to your stage

A firm that recommends starting at $5,000 a month for twelve months isn't built for a seed-stage startup, and a local SEO shop isn't built for a Series C SaaS company. Stage mismatch is the single most common reason a Bay Area engagement fails: the work is competent, but it is the wrong work for the size of the company buying it.

2. Ask how they handle AI search

Your buyers are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity for recommendations. Ask how the agency measures your visibility there and what they do about it. Three follow-ups separate a real practice from a slide: which assistants do you query, how often do you sample each prompt, and can you show me which URLs the model cited for one specific answer?

3. Ask for work in your category

SaaS, fintech, ecommerce and local services need different skills. A fintech program lives and dies on compliance review cycles; a SaaS program lives on comparison and alternatives pages; a local program lives in the map pack. Ask for two examples in your category and what the numbers did.

4. Ask who does the work

Find out who writes, who handles technical fixes and who builds links, and whether those people are employees or freelancers. Also ask how technical recommendations reach your engineers, because in the Bay Area the bottleneck is almost always the development backlog rather than the audit.

5. Look at how they report

You want organic results tied to sign-ups, demos or revenue, not just rankings. Ask to see an anonymized monthly report. If it opens with a ranking table and never reaches a business outcome, you know what the monthly call will be like.

How much does SEO cost in the Bay Area?

The Bay Area is one of the more expensive US markets for agency services. Agencies that publish a figure give you a public anchor to reason from: Victorious recommends budgeting at least $5,000 a month with a 12-month commitment, and describes its retainers as running well above that. Smaller agencies and local specialists often start considerably lower.

What matters is whether the scope matches your goals, so ask any agency to spell out what's included: how many content pieces, how many hours of technical work, whether link acquisition is in the retainer or billed separately, and whether AI visibility tracking is included or an upsell. Two quotes at the same number can differ by a factor of two in actual work delivered.

If you want a rough model of what organic growth is worth to your business before you talk to any agency, run the numbers through our SEO ROI calculator.

Want to see where you stand before you shortlist?

We run free audits covering both halves of the picture: a technical and keyword gap review against your real Bay Area competitors, plus an AI visibility baseline showing how often ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name you. You keep the findings either way.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on what you need. Victorious for enterprise SEO-only programs, Jives Media for full-funnel work, Boomcycle for local businesses and The Business Rover for SaaS and B2B brands that want AI visibility included. Any agency that answers this without asking about your stage and category is not paying attention.

Not necessarily. Industry experience and the quality of the team matter more than location for most SEO work. Local presence helps if you need frequent in-person workshops or you are doing multi-location local SEO across San Francisco, Oakland and the Peninsula.

Typically three to six months for meaningful movement on competitive terms, faster for bottom-funnel pages in less crowded niches. Comparison and alternatives pages often move first because the competition for them is thinner than for category head terms.

Generally yes. Agency rates track local salaries, and the categories concentrated here, particularly SaaS and fintech, are among the most competitive in search. That pushes up both the retainer and the amount of authority you need before rankings move.

Usually not. Before you can describe your category and buyer precisely, SEO work tends to get rewritten. The sensible pre-fit investment is technical foundations, clear category language on your site and making sure AI assistants describe your product accurately. Save the content program for after.

Two names that still appear on competing lists are no longer what they were. Espresso B2B Marketing was acquired and folded into another firm, so it no longer trades independently, and RankScience has discontinued the SEO A/B testing software it was known for while continuing as an agency. It is worth a quick check on any shortlist you are handed: agency lists are rarely re-verified after publication, and an acquisition usually changes who actually does your work.
