What enterprise technical SEO covers
A technical SEO audit on a 500-page site checks pages. On a 500,000-page site it checks systems: the rules that generate URLs, the templates that render them, the logs that show what Googlebot actually does with them, and the release process that changes all of it every fortnight.
The workstreams:
- Crawl budget and log analysis. Log files segmented by bot, template, market, response code and crawl frequency. The output is a picture of where crawl goes versus where revenue is, and the rules to close the gap.
- Indexation control. Valid indexed URLs as a share of submitted, by template. Faceted navigation, parameters, pagination, expired inventory, duplicate clusters and orphan pages handled with rules, not one-off noindex tags.
- Template and rendering diagnostics. Rendered vs raw HTML across every template, JavaScript dependencies, lazy-loaded content, canonical and hreflang consistency, structured data validity at scale.
- Site architecture and internal linking. Click depth by template, link equity distribution against commercial priority, category taxonomy, and the internal linking rules that scale across tens of thousands of pages.
- Migration and replatform engineering. URL mapping, redirect logic and testing, launch gates, staging QA, hreflang and canonical parity, post-launch monitoring. Delivered through SEO migration services with enterprise-scale tooling.
- Core Web Vitals and performance by template. Field data by template group, not a single site score. Fixes prioritised by template traffic value.
- AI crawler readiness. Access and rendering for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, so the enterprise AEO workstream has a foundation.
- Release governance. Pre-release SEO checks in CI where possible, a change log for template releases, and escalation rules for the release that removes canonicals from 40,000 pages.
The enterprise technical SEO audit
The audit is a fixed-scope project. It takes four to six weeks depending on crawl surface and log volume.
- Scoping. Template inventory, market list, tool access (Search Console, analytics, log pipeline, existing crawler). We agree which templates carry revenue so effort goes there first.
- Crawl and log collection. Full or sampled crawl with an enterprise crawler (Botify, Lumar, JetOctopus, Screaming Frog Cloud or the client's platform). Minimum 30 days of logs, segmented.
- Diagnosis by template. Every finding tied to a template group, an estimated URL count, an impact range and a root cause in the platform, not the page.
- Ticketing. Findings become Jira or Linear tickets with reproduction steps, evidence, options, acceptance criteria and impact estimate. Prioritised as a backlog, not a list.
- Readout and 30-day support. Walkthrough with engineering and marketing, then 30 days of implementation support for questions and staging review.
Deliverables
- Executive summary (two pages): the five system-level issues, the revenue at risk, the sprint capacity needed.
- Technical findings by template with evidence, crawl and log data, and root cause.
- Ticketed backlog in your tracker, prioritised, with acceptance criteria.
- Indexation, crawl and rendering baseline dashboard for tracking fixes. Structure per our enterprise SEO reporting guide.
- Migration checklist and launch gate if a migration is in scope.
- Recommendation on whether ongoing governance is needed and what it would cost.
The full process, with what a good audit should and should not include, is in our guide to enterprise SEO audits.

Ongoing technical governance
Audits decay. Every template release can reintroduce the defect. Governance means the technical rules from the audit are owned, tested and monitored:
- Pre-release SEO checks on staging for every template change.
- Weekly log and indexation monitoring by template, with alerts.
- Ticket review before sprint entry.
- Quarterly re-crawl and re-baseline.
Governance runs as the technical workstream of an enterprise SEO programme, or as the release-review component of enterprise SEO consulting if your team executes.
Proof
The 420,000 URL marketplace engagement on our enterprise SEO services page started as a technical audit. The CMS exposed 1.8 million filter combinations, 61% of submitted URLs were indexed and engineering had 73 open SEO tickets with no shared priority. We closed or combined 49, rewrote the rest with acceptance criteria, and over eight months indexed inventory rose to 84% while Googlebot requests to filter combinations fell 47%. Frequently asked questions
Which tools offer enterprise-grade website crawling and diagnostics?
Botify, Lumar (formerly Deepcrawl), JetOctopus, OnCrawl, Screaming Frog in cloud or CLI mode, and the crawl modules inside Conductor, seoClarity and BrightEdge. The differentiators at enterprise scale are log file integration, segmentation by template, JavaScript rendering at volume and scheduling. We use whichever the client has and bring JetOctopus or Screaming Frog Cloud where there is nothing. Detail in best enterprise SEO tools.
How long does an enterprise technical SEO audit take?
Four to six weeks. Scoping and access takes the first week, crawl and 30 days of logs the second and third, diagnosis and ticketing the fourth and fifth, readout the sixth. Sites with more than a million URLs or more than five markets take longer and are sampled by template.
What does an enterprise technical SEO audit cost?
$5,000 to $30,000+ in the market for the same job depending on who does it; credible enterprise audits from specialist firms start around $15,000 in 2026. The cheap end is a tool export with a cover page. The expensive end should include logs, rendering checks, a ticketed backlog and support. Our range is above.
Do you implement the fixes?
If you have engineers, they implement and we support and validate. If you do not, the fixes ship through a managed enterprise SEO programme. We do not run a separate development shop.
Can you audit a site mid-migration?
Yes, and it is the most common time we are called. If the launch is more than four weeks away we can review mapping and staging. If it has already launched and traffic has dropped, we run a recovery audit prioritising redirects, canonicals, indexation and the highest-value templates first.
